Analysis blog of The Euram Bank Open and The Memorial Invitational

Not a good week for us after being in promising positions at the halfway stages of the tournaments. We lost 12 points on the week and are now +97.975 points in profit for 2020 to date.

The Euram Bank Open in Austria – was a glorified Challenge Tour event. There were two players with decent performances from the main tour in the event, Joost Luiten and our selection Adri Arnaus. Neither performed that well, Luiten finishing in joint sixth and Arnaus in joint eleventh. Based upon their form in main tour events they should have been challenging for the win here.

The event as won by Joel Stalter, an Austrian, who is a decent performer on the challenge tour. We move on now to the UK swing with the regular main tour golfers turning out. We have a Wednesday start again this week.

The Memorial Invitational – was won by Jon Rahm, who came back to form to win comfortably on a course where most golfers played poorly over the weekend. Conditions became difficult and the wind blew on Sunday, plus we has a bad weather break. There were some big scores recorded by top golfers here. We did lay Rahm in our in play bet. I did think that he would drop shots on Sunday and I was correct. However most other players did as well. I think that the top golfers need to do better in these type of conditions as this is what they will encounter in the majors. Perhaps the enforced break and the relative ease of courses played since the restart told on them here?

Gary Woodland had an excellent first round and a reasonable second round. However after that he fell apart and dropped through the field. Going forward we may need to be opposing him in bets as he is not putting together four decent rounds in tournaments. The worse thing about his poor performance of the weekend is that if he had managed to remain in the top 20 overall we would have broken even on our bets.

Rory was poor all week really. He was hitting the ball all over the course and should be opposed until he finds some decent form again. perhaps Rahm dethroning him as world number one here will spur him on to get back to form?

Other golfers – Justin Rose was awful again. Dustin Johnson was awful too, scoring 80 in one round. Both missed the cut comfortably. Brooks Koepka is still playing poorly. Ricky Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama continue to fail and should always be opposed. Matt Fitzpatrick finished well here. He does like hard courses and difficult conditions and so we have to look to him when conditions to play hard. A future Open Championship winner in the making when the weather in the UK is bad.

This coming weeks tournament, The 3M Open, will have a weakened field as players rest in preparation for The USPGA Championship in early August.

All the best, Martin.
